When it comes to cooling a building, air conditioning units much achieve a delicate balance of cooling
the people in the building and combating the growth of mold. Simply put: your vents can neither be too
cold, nor too warm. In an ideal world, air conditioning units would be running in 10–15-minute intervals,
continuing to push air throughout the vents. This movement is one of the ways in which your units
combat the growth of mold; without this cycle of movement, mold begins to fester.
According to the EPA, there is no real way to eliminate all mold and spores in your building. This tracks
with our experience of more than 40 years. Instead, you want to control moisture and airflow; so long as
there are no leaks and air is not sitting stagnant, mold cannot grow. However, even if your buildings are
up to date, this does not ensure that your units are, as well. When mold in your vents goes untreated, it
can have an adverse effect on the people breathing your air.
Let’s say that you have a space that is particularly susceptible to mold growth (such as air vents). The
more your vents sit unused, the more likely we are to find mold when cleaning them. Because although
mold can grow on virtually any substance or surface, it is much more likely to grow in stagnant, dead
areas. In our experience, if you find, say, a quarter size of mold growth on the inside wall of a vent
where there is airflow, there is going to be a dollar size of mold growth on the side that has no air flow.
The other component of mold growth in vents is how dark the space is. Even if your vents are sitting and
soaking wet without any air movement, mold can still be combatted with UV lights, which could possibly
be installed in your units. Taking time to research your options and contact professionals who know how
to work with vents and properly treat ductwork.
