The Importance of Having Your Ducts Cleaned

February 7, 2024

Duct cleaning involves cleaning the system components of your air systems, including your HVAC. Over time, these components become contaminated with dirt and debris as well as mold, depending on the amount of moisture present in the system. Due to the wide range of possible contaminants, the members of your household may suffer allergic reactions or cause you to develop new symptoms. When cleaning ductwork, failure to clean any one component could cause a re-contamination of the entire system. This means that how your ducts are cleaned, as well as who cleans them, is a crucial part of your ductwork being cleaned.

According to the
National Air Duct Cleaners Association, here are just a few of the contaminants that may be currently living in your ducts:

  • Human hair and dander
  • Sheetrock, wood and paint dust
  • Chemical residue from caulking and cleaning
  • Dog hair and dander
  • Carbon black (whether a gas or oil-fired system)
  • Gunpowder from the construction process
  • Glass particles and fiberglass
  • Wood shavings and chips
  • General waste from construction

Many homeowners believe that their system filter is enough to catch any debris that enters their airspace; however, your filter is physically unable to account for all of the contaminants present in your ductwork. Although HEPA filters catch 99.98% of all contaminants, the simple fact is that air must move through the filter or your HVAC will not function. This is why your filter is unable capture 100% of contaminants, and it is also why routine cleaning and maintenance of your HVAC is vitally important.

This importance also extends to newly purchased HVAC units. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know how long your unit was sitting in the factory prior to its installation or whether it was properly sealed. This makes it critical for new systems to be cleaned prior to use. Moreover, even if your new unit was perfectly uncontaminated, there will still be dust, dirt and debris left over from the old unit. This means that prior to any new installation, your ducts will need to be cleaned out to maximize your new unit.

At Steamatic of Connecticut, we understand the importance of air duct cleaning, not to mention air purification and odor removal. With our industry-leading methods and technology—
